Intersectionality Can't Wait
Intersectionality Can't Wait
As a Hispanic woman I relate to this topic. Ever since I was in high school, I wondered if I could apply for college without worrying about being as good as the students that weren't Hispanic or weren't women. I felt like I had to work 3x as hard as others because no matter how hard I tried my efforts weren't seen as enough. The educational system is not on the side of justice when it comes to minorities, we are not given the chance to rise above oppressors and share our voice without being discriminated or excluded. When I was little my mom always told me that I can be whatever I want when I grow up but as time passed I realized that its not true, I don't have the luxury to make the same mistakes as white kids. Being raised in a Dominican household my parents always reminded me that they moved to the united stated in order for me to have a better life than they had but what they weren't aware that just because they wanted me to have a better life it doesn't mean that society agreed with them. I believe I live a good life but not because justice and equality are on my side, I live a good life because I work hard to make sure that I am not going to be put in a position where I am looked down upon. At my work place I worked hard to be the person that others ask permission to instead of being the one that has to ask for permission. Intersectionality is something I relate to but it is not something that I let define me, I am proud to be a Hispanic woman even if it means society will expects me to fail.

You are right about women and minorities not being able to get the same job opportunities as men. I think they are certain jobs out there strictly for men, if a woman is able to do the same job or even a better job they are still overlooked. It was sincere of you to share your own experiences that related to the text, good job.
ReplyDeleteMy dad used to tell me that we had to work 3x harder than anyone else just to get the job, and then they still looked down on us.
