NOTES ON THE FILM

According to this film, how has the INSTITUTION  (of school, of government, of community) FAILED to educate all kids equally?

  • Segregation 

  • The school system failed in ensuring that the schools got the resources they needed to succeed but in fact what was happening is they were getting pushed out of the school system.

  • Minority schools have two thirds of their teachers that have old certification and licensing requirements. predominantly minority schools have 15% larger classes than predominantly white schools.








According to this film, how has the CHANGE/PROGRESS happened?  Who has worked to make schools more equitable and how?

In 1957 a group og black students in Little Rock Arkansas took a courageous stand for educational equality.









Where do you see Johnson and privilege begin given to some but not others?  



I see privilege everywhere but one specific part of the film that caught my attention especially with the segregation in these states, the privilege for education is creating our kids to not in integrated and growing up with the thought of having to go to school with people their own race only, in the film when “ Sibyl Hampton” says “ of my experience I never described itr as an intervention it was never intended that we would be treated as equals” also when she mentions that being one of the first African American student to attend an actual high school experience at Central high claims that no one spoke to her during those three years she was shunned well the african american kids were SHUNNED.




Where do you see SCWAAMP and the things that are most valued?  


Students tools leadership on how they want there school to look like, without student taking leadership they wouldn't have a change at all despite their flaws and differences they get together and with the same things we value and work on building a community as tennagers they can make their voices be heard and influence how adult shape OUR future.

Where do you see Delpit’s rules and codes of power?  


In America it is not just integrating across skin color and social class in about integrating different languages and cultures and experiences.



Power was everywhere within this film “ everything comes down to the money” , the best way for the schools to support what they needed financially was unfortunately by having white people in schools. 


Where do you see Kozol and the places he says institutions are to blame for poverty and racism? 


The segregation between the school, for example New York, the film talks about how 





Who are positioned as experts in this film? Race? Gender? Age? 

Students : If we don't do something about it no one will

Queer in schools

Reflection// Argument #9 Queer in schools!! Queering in schools is a concept that has been gaining traction in recent years. It refers to the process of challenging and disrupting heteronormative and cisnormative assumptions, practices, and policies in educational settings. This is done in order to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. In this weeks reading Rethinking Schools believe that queering in schools is a necessary and important step towards achieving social justice in education. They argue that schools should not only be safe spaces for LGBTQ+ students, but also places where all students are taught to respect and value diversity and difference. However, they also acknowledge that queering in schools is not without its challenges. Finn Literacy with an Attitude Reflection: In the article Finn expresses how poor class students received functional literacy that promotes compliance while students from privileged backgrounds were taught above average and powerful literacy that promotes power and independence. It is connected to my opinion on education equality which is that I believe everyone should have the chance to receive above average education from educators that are extremely capable of providing powerful literacy and support. “The struggle for justice and equality requires empowering education and powerful literacy”.Some students these days no longer care about learning and having the opportunity to have a better future but it is not entirely their fault.
